This takes place in the Revelation Space universe, after Absolution Gap with flashbacks to earlier times. It has some of the spark of the universe's original mind-blowing ideas, but really pales in comparison to the original trilogy, The Prefect, and Chasm City. I've been enjoying Reynold's books for 20+ years now, but I think the quest format just didn't work as well as it could have. It felt forced, and I never really felt a strong connection to the characters. All that said - it was entertaining in a hard and dark sci-fi kind of way.
