The first novel length book in what has been a series of novellas. I've found it delightful, character driven fantasy. This series is filled with political machinations, assassins, imprisonments, plague, pirates, and other perils, but still manages to have a gentle feel. Maybe that's the wrong word, but on the whole it's a comforting series. And Bujold is a master wordsmith.
